Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, Matter — Which Protocol Does What?

When you start researching smart homes, you inevitably come across words like Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, and Matter. They sound technical and complicated, but they really aren't. Here's a simple explanation without jargon — just what you actually need to know.

Wi-Fi — You Already Know This One

Wi-Fi is something you already have at home and probably know well. Many smart devices connect directly to your home Wi-Fi network — no additional equipment, no middleman device.

Advantage: Easy setup, no hub required.

Downside: Wi-Fi devices consume more power, and if you have a lot of devices, they can overload your network. Not ideal for battery-powered sensors.

Zigbee — Small but Mighty

Zigbee is a wireless protocol designed specifically for smart homes. Devices running on Zigbee consume very little energy — perfect for battery-powered sensors that last for years.

Zigbee devices communicate with each other and form a mesh network — the more devices you have, the stronger and more stable the network becomes. For Zigbee you need a hub (like the Aqara Hub M3) that connects the devices to your phone.

Advantage: Stability, long battery life, excellent for larger systems.

Downside: A hub is required.

Thread — The Next Generation

Thread is a newer protocol that works similarly to Zigbee, but is even more efficient and resilient. It also builds a mesh network between devices, but doesn't require a traditional hub — a Thread Border Router is enough, and this is already built into many modern devices.

Advantage: Modern, fast, no single point of failure.

Downside: Still a smaller selection of devices compared to Zigbee.

Matter — The Universal Language of the Smart Home

Matter isn't a signal transmission protocol — it's a communication standard. Think of it as a universal language spoken by all smart devices, regardless of brand or ecosystem.

A device with Matter support works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa simultaneously. This is the future of the smart home — and the good news is that it's already here.

Advantage: Compatible with everything, no locking into one ecosystem.

Downside: Not all devices support it yet.
